40 Students from 6 Schools in Montserrado, Liberia Participate in Career Awareness Training
One of the biggest challenges faced by students leaving high school is making a choice as to which career path to choose. This, when not properly considered, leads to delay and prolong stay in colleges and universities. A huge number of students complete high school not knowing what to pursue at the university and technical school levels.
Hence, the reason for the Youth Empowerment Initiatives launching this program.
The event which took place at the Effort Baptist Church School in Paynesville, brought together 40 students from 6 public, private and church schools.
The occasion brought experienced and career professionals face to face with the students as a way of encouraging, inspiring, and guiding them into making career decisions. The speakers included the Assistant Minister of Teachers Education at the Ministry of Education, the chairman of the Engineering Department of the University of Liberia, a legal counsel at the Zoe and Partners Law Firm, and a career Christian marriage counselor.
Of the 40 students in attendance, 16 were males while 24 were females. Participating schools included the Assembly of God Upper Room School, Calvary Chapel High School, Effort Baptist Church School, Maretha School System, Nathen E. Gibson High School, and Zion Praise Academy.
Inspiring students at the career awareness program, the Assistant Minister of Education of Liberia, Minister Clifford Konah, Jr. encouraged students to consider the field of Education and Teaching, stressing that Liberia needs more trained and qualified teachers. He said, “Education is the mother of all careers and professions.
Minister Konah pledged his support to the programs of the Youth Empowerment Initiatives because according to him, it is highly beneficial to the Ministry’s goals.
Speaking on the topic, Engineering as a Career Choice, Mr. Mencer T. Powoe, Chairman of the Engineering Department of the University of Liberia, inspired the students to make a great career choice by choosing Engineering. He said that we apply some form of engineering in our daily life. He said engineers are great decision makers and they help in the development of their society. He encouraged females to consider the career and not leave it to only their male counterparts.
Madam Martha Partor, a professional Christian Marriage Counsellor, engaged the young students in a very interactive session on Dating and Courtship. She said it was important to discuss the topic because dating and courtship decisions
greatly affect the learning of young people, especially young girls.
She advised the students to follow the Bible’s teaching and discuss their relationships with their parents.
Attorney Lawrence Sua, a Legal Counsel at Zoe and Partner Law Firm, speaking on the topic Lawyer As a Career Choice, stressed that choosing the profession is profitable. He however cautioned that it deals with the fate of real humans, and encouraged students wanting to choose the career to put honesty and integrity at the forefront.
